ALA MOANA. From high on the 36th floor, guests are treated to stunning views of the city ­ an apt complement to Aaron's well-considered cuisine. Among the delicacies you'll discover are porcini-crusted ahi loin, a grilled rib-eye with gorgonzola crust, and a blackened pork chop with pineapple marmalade. Diver scallops and lobster also prove tempting. A private room in the glass-enclosed wine cellar is available for special occasions, and the restaurant's status as a terrific after-hours nightclub is recognized throughout Honolulu.

MOILIILI. For more than a generation, this much-loved establishment has offered patrons an eclectic mix of terrific music. The decor isn't at all chic, and the clientele consists largely of college students and regulars who come to kick back and take in the soulful sounds of rock and blues. Bands are largely local, and performers aren't afraid to take chances with their style, so come and be part of the ambience and get a taste of real Hawaii. Good happy hour deals too.

WAIKIKI. Set right along Waikiki Beach, this open-air bar offers the best of Hawaii, from balmy temperatures and gentle sea breezes to views of Diamond Head in the distance and terrific people-watching as well. In the evenings, as the sun begins to set, folks gather for live music ­ both guitar and piano ­ and for hula dancing in the authentic manner. The combination of delights is a real sensory feast and an experience you won't soon forget.

DOWNTOWN. Offering both indoor dining and outdoor dining amid lush greenery, this much-loved place makes regulars of all its guests. The cuisine springs from Thai traditions but expands greatly, thanks to Hawaiian ingredients and the chef's boundless innovation. For example, you'll find crispy soft-shell crabs with chili-miso beurre blanc, oven-roasted breast of rabbit with plum wine demiglace, and Asian-style osso bucco. There's also lamb, beef, pork, duck, and fresh fish of all persuasions. Dishes are visually gorgeous as well, and island musicians provide highlights during the evening.

DOWNTOWN. Tropical decor and memorabilia distinguish this restaurant and bar, which honors Honolulu-born entertainer Don Ho. Set on the water at Aloha Tower, the club enjoys a reputation for great views, tasty fare, and wonderful Hawaiian music. Played Sunday to Wednesday, the traditional stylings make a great accompaniment to mai tais and pupus (appetizers). Although the music schedule varies, you can always count on great tunes. Plus, Thursday is reggae night, live performers hit the stage on Friday, and patrons kick up their collective heels at Saturday's disco beach party.
