ALA MOANA. You can't miss this casual place, thanks to its brick-red exterior and white trim. That's not what you'll remember, though, after you've tried the downhome Southern fare. Dixie is perfect for a family outing, especially since everybody likes burgers, ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, and barbecued or fried chicken. You'll also find fried shrimp and catfish, steamed crabs, and even steak. Add in beans, hush puppies, cole slaw, and pecan pie, and you've got the recipe for good eatin'! And you don't have to dress up, either.

WAIKIKI. Dining beneath a graceful, arching hau tree by the water ­ could there be any more gracious setting? This outdoor venue delights diners with its idyllic ambience and then confirms the pleasure with delicious cuisine. Breakfast brings traditional fare and updates it with island touches, including fresh fish and local produce. Try an omelet, or perhaps a stack of fluffy pancakes, and take in the same lovely view that Robert Louis Stevenson reputedly did, years ago.

KAHALA. If you're the sort who likes a touch of culinary drama, keep an eye on the open kitchen at this striking restaurant. Wood-burning ovens, a grill, and sizzling woks provide spectacle as the staff prepares roast fish, grilled rack of lamb, and stir-fried lobster. Quality, however, isn't lost amid the machinations; rather, everything is first-rate, especially crisped whole island fish, osso bucco, and ahi tuna in its many incarnations. Terrific views complement the experience, as does an attentive staff. Pricey but worth the expense.

ALA MOANA. This casual establishment attracts a faithful following of locals, who clamor for the healthy, flavorful food and the expansive selection of dishes. The set-up resembles a cafeteria, and the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. Substantial servings and a quick turnaround also add to the place's appeal. Choose from a wealth of entrees featuring seafood, chicken, vegetables, and more. You're sure to find something to please everyone.

HALEIWA. A North Shore mainstay, Jameson's ably accommodates visitors and local folks with its array of seafood dishes and its waterside location. Downstairs, a casual ambience prevails, thanks to the restaurant's lunchtime fare and comfortable deck. The specialty here is sandwiches, salads, and soups. Upstairs, dinner is served in fancier digs. Steaks and other dishes are available, but you'd do well to indulge in fresh seafood, whether it be sauteed mahi mahi, poached opakapaka, or shrimp prepared a number of ways.
